Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass | return
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery can be performed as either an open or laparoscopic procedure. Laparoscopy is considered a better option for many patients because it is less invasive, typically requires only a two-day hospital stay, and the recovery time is shorter.
Laparoscopic Gastric Bands | return
The adjustable gastric band procedure is the least invasive. It involves placing an adjustable silicone band around the top of the part of the stomach. The lap-band may be adjusted after surgery to promote maximum weight loss without side effects. Patients typically stay in the hospital only overnight.
Sleeve Gastrectomy | return
Sleeve gastrectomy represents the middle ground between laparoscopic Roux-en-Y and Lap-Band. This procedure generates weight loss through gastric restriction (reduced stomach volume). The stomach is restricted by stapling and dividing it vertically and removing more than 80 percent of it. This part of the procedure is not reversible. The stomach that remains is shaped like a very slim banana. Patients typically stay in the hospital one to two nights.
