The Sutter Medical Center Foundation Board of Trustees presented a check to Sutter Neuroscience Institute for $450,000 on Oct. 29 for a new fluorescence microscope, which will help strengthen and expand the neurosurgical oncology program.
The use of a microscope to help a neurosurgeon see brain tissue more clearly isn’t new, but the addition of fluorescence will help improve patient outcomes and enhance patient safety.
Fluorescence –a clinically safe iodine-based compound administered intravenously into the patient – allows physicians to more accurately visualize tumor cells for resection or for other surgeries like aneurysm repair. The increased visualization also helps surgeons avoid healthy brain and spinal cord tissue.
Furthermore, the use of fluorescence eliminates radiation exposure and takes up less space, set-up and staff time versus the other courses of treatment used before for the conditions.
Thanks to the generosity of donors, Sutter Neuroscience Institute will be able to utilize this proven technology to help patients heal and get back to their daily lives.Events Wrap Up
