Surgery with the da Vinci offers proven advantages.

Sutter's investment in the da Vinci® system for robotic-assisted surgery is a commitment to your health and well-being. Currently used at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento for for prostate removal, gynecologic surgery, urogynecology and gynecologic oncology, the da Vinci is expected to be used in future applications, as well. At present, the da Vinci is also FDA-approved for use in heart, gallbladder removal, gastroesophageal reflux correction, and other laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgeries.

The da Vinci does not replace the surgeon; the system enhances the surgeon's skill by providing a magnified, three-dimensional view of surgery site that allows the surgeon to see more detail than is possible with the human eye. The da Vinci also provides special tools the surgeon guides to perform the surgery. Instead of the long abdominal incision necessary for open prostate removal surgery, the da Vinci's tools are inserted through tiny incisions and guided by the surgeon from a special viewing console. The combination of better viewing, precision surgical tools, and small incisions create less blood loss and pain, fewer complications, and a faster return to normal daily activities.

Used by surgeons at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento to surgically remove the prostate gland (prostatectomy), the da Vinci has proven to be easier on the patient than traditional open surgeries, requiring smaller incisions and reducing blood loss. In addition, surgeons hope the precision possible with the da Vinci will lead to reduced chance of impotency, which has been a common issue with traditional prostatectomies. From the patient perspective, da Vinci-assisted surgery generally means less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times.

For gynecologic and urologic procedures, robot-assisted surgery with the da Vinci® Surgical System may be the most effective, least invasive treatment option. Through tiny, 1-2 cm incisions, surgeons using the da Vinci System, the surgeon can operate with greater precision and control, minimizing the pain and risk associated with large incisions while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.
